Georgia Truck Accident Resource Guide
A record-keeping guide for people involved in a crash with a commercial truck in Georgia.
What to save and ask about
Put safety first
Call 911 for injuries or immediate danger. Keep clear of the truck, spilled cargo and traffic. Follow instructions from emergency responders.
Identify the truck and carrier
From a safe location, record the company name, truck and trailer plates, unit numbers and any visible USDOT number. The tractor and trailer may have different owners.
Keep the report details
Save the responding agency, officer details and report number. Request the report and check that the vehicles and companies are correctly identified.
Preserve photos and witness details
Keep original images of vehicle damage, road conditions and visible cargo. Note nearby cameras and witness contacts without entering private property.
Keep treatment and expense records
Save medical summaries, bills, prescriptions and travel receipts. Keep repair, towing and storage records in a separate section.
Ask about time-sensitive evidence
If you consult a lawyer, ask promptly about preserving driver logs, electronic data, dashcam footage and maintenance records. Some records may be overwritten or lost.
Keep a communication timeline
Log calls and letters from insurers and company representatives. Keep copies of any documents you receive, including forms you are asked to sign.
